English School. Landscape painter and writer on art, painted in oils and pastels. Post Impressionist. Born in Manchester. Studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris under Gerome. An enthusiastic Francophile, spent regular periods in France painting scenes in the Valley of the Seine in an impressionistic manner. A follower of Monet. Member of RBA. Exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, also in Berlin, Cologne and at the Paris Salon. Published 'Impressionistic Painting, its Genesis and Development' in 1904, which was the first important study of the French Impressionists to be published in English.
